38392There is an ongoing struggle within the American public school system (with the exception of Texas and some select districts in additional states) to avoid acknowledging dyslexia as a learning disability (LD).This issue is not addressed due to a myriad of reasons-most significantly the lack of funding for specialized teaching.Studies have shown that up to 15 percent of the population has some degree of dyslexia but only five out of 100 receive help, the Dyslexia Research Institute reports. 

Dyslexia is a neurological disorder and affects children regardless of social background or intelligence.

Therefore, it is up to parents to identify that their child’s academic issues are due to dyslexia, locate accurate testing for it through private organizations, advocate with the school administration and teachers and, ultimately, hire specialized tutoring. 

To clarify the above information, many learning disabilities are addressed in the public school systems, but not specifically dyslexia.  Additionally, none of the LD students are taught on a one-on-one basis which is a critical element in successfully teaching dyslexic children.

The SMRF is dedicated to provide appropriate tutoring to give dyslexic children an opportunity to read as well as other non-dyslexic students.  We know this can be accomplished through specific programs and support.
